At your initial consultation, Dr. Signorino will evaluate for the presence of orofacial myofunctional disorders.

What are Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs)?

OMDs are abnormal, adaptive patterns that develop within the oral facial complex. These disorders can affect the functioning and muscles of the mouth and face. Example of OMDs include:

  • Thumb or finger sucking habits
  • Tongue Thrust/Irregular Swallow
  • Other harmful habits

Common Causes of OMDs

  • The nasal airway is restricted due to a deviated septum, allergies or enlarged tonsils and adenoids.
  • Habitual mouth breathing
  • Improper oral habits, for example cheek biting, teeth grinding/clenching or thumb sucking.
  • Long-term use of the pacifier or sippy cup
  • Neurological impairments and developmental delays
